Millions of dollars are lost a year because of people with fake insurance. Currently, at the Cape police headquarters, 16 insurance companies are working along side police officers during this operation.
Thursday's operation worked like this: a police officer pulled a driver over for some type of traffic violation. During that stop, they checked with the insurance companies to see if the driver is legitamately covered.
Normally, law enforcement doesn't have this technology. They can't run insurance cards in real time, so they have to take it at face value. Having no insurance or fake insurance is a felony and ends up raising the cost of premiums for people with valid insurance.
Cape police are conducting this operation until 2:00 p.m. on Thursday.
