NAPLES, Fla.- Embattled Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker was met by protesters at a speaking engagement in Naples Wednesday.

Democrats in his home state are trying to force a recall election to get him out of office.

Several southwest Florida labor union members are joining their fight, showing disdain for anti-union reform laws passed by the governor.

"With things like that going on in Wisconsin, actually adds fuel to some of what our legislators are trying to do to the working class down here.  We believe it's wrong," President of Support Personnel for Lee Co. Schools Bob Rushlow said.

Governor Walker supported sweeping legislation in Wisconsin that requires state workers to pay part of their retirement and healthcare.

"These employees are not the reason for the recession.  They're not the ones that caused this.  Yet, you're going to balance the budget on their backs and yet you haven't explored other avenues.  Same thing here in Florida," Lee County Teachers Union President Mark Castellano said.

Many of Wednesday's protesters say Walker was fundraising during his visit to Naples to raise money for his recall campaign.

"He could raise a million dollars, but we as Americans have something more powerful than the almighty dollar.  It is the vote," North Naples Firefighters Association President Chris Spencer said.

The event was for members of the James Madison Institute, a non-partisan public policy think tank.

Communications director for the JMI, Tanja Clendinen told WINK News, "The proceeds from ticket sales are covering event expenses.  Should there be funds remaining after event expenses have been paid, those will go to the Institute and not to Governor Walker's campaign."

Calls to Governor Walker's office were not returned Wednesday.
