LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- In the last week, nearly half a dozen people have been killed on southwest Florida roads. Some of the deadly accidents happened at what are considered the busiest intersections in town.
Depending on who you ask, the busiest intersection might be different depending on which driver you ask. But it seems everyone in southwest Florida agrees on one thing.
"Traffic is tough," said Bill Barber, a driver.
It is why Frank Rowan takes the back roads.
"Its quicker. I don't have to worry about the mess," said Rowan.
Traffic in Lee County is considered at an all time high. The heart of tourist season is happening and that means drivers are on the road.
"This time of the year is the busiest. It seems to be that season has picked up more than last year, last two or three years," said Donald Scott, executive director, Lee County Metropolitan Planning Organization.
According to the Lee County Department of Transportation, the three intersections with the most accidents are:
1. Lee Blvd. and Gunnery Rd.
2. Del Prado Blvd. and Veterans Pkwy.
3. Daniels Pkwy. and Treeline Ave.
When it comes to the intersections seeing the highest number of cars:
1. Colonial Blvd. and US 41
2. Del Prado Blvd. and Veterans Pkwy.
3. US 41 and Daniels
So just how many cars does it take to be considered a busy intersection?
"When you get to intersection volumes of crossing over, when you start adding all them up, over 100,000, that's when you get the busiest ones in the county," said Scott.
Lee County puts aside $1.5 million yearly to help with intersection improvement. As a result of that, changes are on the way.
"Another thru lane for west bound on Six Mile Cypress crossing over the Gladiolus," said Scott.
If you're driving, other drivers suggest allowing yourself extra time. But if you love the traffic or hate it, Rowan says there is a positive spin to everyone being in town.
"If they're down here boosting the economy, I love it," said Rowan.
Surveys will be coming out in the mail in early March for driver feedback. Watch your mail for those. The Lee County Metro Planning Organization says survey feedback will help them decide what intersections need the most help.
