PORT CHARLOTTE Fla.- The search is on for nearly two-dozen guns, on the streets after a brazen Charlotte County burglary. Masked thieves smashed through the store's front door at the Army Navy store in Charlotte County and stole the weapons in seconds.. Investigators have security video for evidence. But by all standards, even local law enforcement tells us they considered the gun store to be one of the most secure gun stores in the county. When owner Wnston Schooley opened the Amy Navy Store. At the new Port Charlotte location in October, security was on the top of his mind. “We don't take the responsibility of selling firearms lightly and when we moved to this location one of the reasons was to have a more secure location,”said Schooley.
But despite Schooley's best laid plans thieves managed to gain access to his store early this morning. "3 men at least that seemed to be well organized smashed that door for over four minutes,” said Schooley. One inside, the suspects worked very fast to clear out two dozen handguns. “The gentlemen were feeding the middle gentlemen were feeding the guns right out of the cabinets and into the satchels,” said Schooley. The store has a video surveillance system and a large safe in the back. We asked why the guns were not locked in the safe and Schooley had a very viable explanation. “Taking inventory down that’s this large every night is almost unheard of in the industry because it actually can damage the guns being handled like that,” said Schooley. And with an inventory of more than 400 guns, its a process that would take employees two hours a day to accomplish. But it's one of many changes Schooley plans to make to keep his inventory safe.
