TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Nearly 700 businesses around the state have joined Florida child welfare officials to help needy families.

The Department of Children and Families launched a program in December encouraging business leaders from all sectors to find a way to connect with local families.

Since then, business ranging from local construction companies, civic groups and attorneys to real estate offices, restaurants and sports teams have stepped up to the plate.

Some of the volunteers have become mentors, bought presents for foster kids or clothes for homeless shelters. One company built wheelchair ramps for the disabled and another started drug prevention programs for children.

Secretary David Wilkins said the passion of the volunteers has been truly inspirational.
