PORT CHARLOTTE Fla.- Jose Ruiz says he was returning to his home on Gibralter drive from store when he says the unthinkable happened. “The brakes failed. I hit the brakes and they did not work and the car kept going,” said Ruiz. His old 4 door sedan kept going. All the way down his driveway, through his yard, through a fence and into his neighbors home on Hernando Ave.  Bernadette Santos and Coco the dog were the only ones inside the home when Ruizes car came tearing through the lanai and hitting the home. I heard the three glass doors started to shake and then Coco goes crazy the dog and I looked out and I'm like oh my god,” said Santos.

Santos's sister Joann Fulton is the home's owner, she was at work when the accident happened. She took the whole accident with a grain of salt. “This is what I came home to. What can you do?” questioned Fulton. The fire fighters pulled Ruiz from the older sedan. They say it's extremely fortunate no one was hurt.  Despite the damage, Fulton says she holds no ill will towards her neighbor. In fact, she says she was delighted to see he was okay. “The first thing I did when I got here and I saw him standing is I went and I hugged him even the police officers looked at me like--- and they just smiled,” said Fulton.

Damage to the home is estimated to be between 10 and 15 thousand dollars. Deputies told us that Ruiz may face a traffic citation for the accident.
