Lee county is getting a recommendation for lower impact fees on many types of new construction. However, the cuts would be modest, and some in the building industry are disappointed, saying they want deeper cuts in fees.
"We need help, we are just struggling along at a snail's pace. Some counties have suspended the fees and if we did that, I think we'd have an increase in sales of new homes," said Michael Reitmann of the Lee Building Industry Association.
"I believe the reductions are fair, according to the consultant and the methodology they used to study the fee system. I don't believe there is a correlation between no fees and more building in other counties," said Mary Gibbs, dir. of community development.
Lee Commissioners have the final say on any new fee structure.
