FORT MYERS, Fla.- When you order at a restaurant, there's no confusion. You know what you're getting and how much it will cost you thanks to printed menus or posted signs. Now, legislation being discussed in the State House would take some of that guesswork out of your next trip to the doctor's office, too.

"Any reform that they can make in medical cost disclosure to people is going to benefit all of us," said Nancy Maloney. Maloney and her husband don't have health insurance, so knowing what they have to pay at the doctor's up front is critical.

"Every penny counts," said Maloney. "If we decided to have these procedures, and we're cashing paying patients, we would need to know the exact bottom line."

A bill being discussed in Tallahassee would require doctors to publish those prices.

Troy Campbell works at "What's up Dog", a restaurant in downtown Fort Myers. He says his customers know the prices before they order, and patients should know before they agree to certain medical services as well.

"I think they should regulate that and have it posted or have a little pamphlet that says this is how much it's going to cost you," said Campbell.

The legislation would also make it mandatory for certain medical care centers to post 3-by-5 foot signs in their waiting rooms.

"It's quite a large sign as you can imagine with fifty different services listed on there," explain Dr. Annette St. Pierre MacKoul. "But it's primarily to allow patients to come in and price compare."

At MacKoul Pediatrics in Fort Myers, a price list is available upon request. But Dr. MacKoul worries mandating a large "menu-style" board could undermine the profession.

"We always try to hold ourselves to a higher standard, and when you have a price list, it demeans the medical aspect of it," said Dr. MacKoul.

If the bill becomes law, medical providers found not in compliance with the new guidelines will be fined up to $1,000 a day, until the issue is remedied.

A similar bill failed to make it to committee in the State Senate. But if the House version is approved, it will go to the Senate for an up or down vote.
