BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. - A fire at a Bonita Springs tire store destroyed thousands of dollars worth of tires and caused moderate damage to a nearby business.

Bonita Springs firefighters responded to New Life Tires on Old Highway 41 around 8:30 Saturday night. Officials say the fire appears to have started in a storage area behind the shop.

It then spread to an insurance agency next door, causing damage to the roof. The fire department says there was no structural damage to either building.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office is investigating the cause.

Meantime, Jose Martinez, a supervisor at New Life Tires, thinks the situation is suspicious.

"I've been working here the last three years and never had such a thing -- just tires by themselves caught on fire when it's 70 degrees out, during the night," Martinez says.

Firefighters say both businesses were closed at the time.

There was a fire station less than a quarter-mile away, which officials say helped keep damage to a minimum.
