NAPLES, Fla.- Dozens of feet are pounding the pavement to raise awareness for victims of childhood sex abuse.

27-year-old Lauren Book says recovering from the atrocity of childhood sex abuse starts with a single step.

"It's all about our survivors and having them have a sense of empowerment, giving them something that can give them a little bit of hope," Book said Wednesday.

She founded the non-profit "Lauren's Kids" ten years ago, after coming forward as a victim herself.

"I'm a survivor of childhood sexual abuse from the time I was 11 years old, until I was 16 at the hands of my female nanny," Book said.

The group is walking the State of Florida in hopes of raising awareness and educating Floridians about the problem. Their journey: a 1,500 mile walk North from Key West, with the symbolic voyage ending at the State Capitol.

"It seems impossible. It seems like you can't do it. But step by step, day by day, you'll get there," Book said.

Already, the nonprofit has helped introduce abuse prevention curriculum into elementary school classrooms in hopes that education, will allow more victims to reach for help.

"Only about 33 percent if that high, report a sexual assault. There are many different kinds, so a lot of people don't come forward," said Michelle English, Executive Director of Collier County's Project Help.

Now, "Lauren's Kids" is working to tighten a loophole in Florida's abuse reporting law to prevent crimes from going undetected.

"It's about turning that really negative, ugly experience into a positive one. We need to make sure that this didn't happen in vain," Book said.
