GULF OF MEXICO - Coast Guard teams rescued a man from a cruise ship off the coast of Sanibel on Sunday.
The Coast Guard said a 37 year-old man was suffering heart attack symptoms on the Jewel of the Seas, as it sailed about 25 miles west of Sanibel Island around 3am Sunday. A Coast Guard flight surgeon determined immediate medical attention was needed. The flight surgeon recommended a utility boat crew respond, as it would be too risky to fly the patient in a helicopter.
A crew from the Fort Myers Beach Coast Guard station arrived at the scene just after 6am with a local EMT, who safely transported the patient back to the Coast Guard station, and later to Lee Memorial Hospital.
The man's name and current condition have not been released.
