NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Two people are dead after a shooting in the Suncoast Estates community of North Fort Myers. It happened at about 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon on Marx Drive. When deputies arrived, they found one woman injured, she later died.
"We were going to the post office, we heard the gunshots and we took off because we figured it was nothing," said Kim Dickey, neighbor.
Dickey said she's used to hearing gunshots around her Suncoast Estates neighborhood but Friday it came a little close for comfort.
"It was like three and then three and then two. Real fast. Horrible, scary. Very scary. Yea, that close to my house, that's pretty scary," said Dickey.
Friday at about 4:30 p.m., deputies said a man shot a woman at a home at 7588 Marx Drive. The woman died before making it to Lee Memorial Hospital. Deputies blocked off the area for hours while they searched for the suspect.
"We do have all our ground troops out here. Everybody is in full force to make sure that we take care of this and secure the scene properly," said Sgt. David Velez, Lee County Sheriff's Office.
Just before 9 p.m. Friday, the suspect was found dead near where the shooting happened. During their search, it kept people like Jessica Rose away from her house.
"Its kind of sad that this is the society that we've come to live in these days. I remember being younger and being able to run all over the streets and my mom and dad not have to worry about me. Now I barely let my kids out of the yard," said Rose.
The man and woman who are dead have not been identified because deputies need to notify their family. Rose said they kept to themselves.
"From what I understand from my in-laws, they don't come out very often. They didn't hear from them too often," said Rose.
Deputies plan to stay out near the home until they finish their investigation. They plan to release more information over the weekend.
