PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) - Some endangered green sea turtle hatchlings hitched a ride with the U.S. Coast Guard to warmer waters in the Atlantic.

Sea turtles usually make their way to the ocean right after hatching. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission called for help for 29 turtles that hatched 50 days later than usual.

On Jan. 6, a Coast Guard boat ferried the hatchings and Air Force biologists 20 miles offshore to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration buoy, where the turtles were released.

Biologists say the lift to warmer waters gives the turtles a better chance of survival.
