SANIBEL, Fla.- Sanibel Island is taking a step to help its growing biking community. The island's bike club is building a new hub for bicyclists.

As soon as you drive into Sanibel Island you probably won't get far without seeing a bicyclist. That has prompted Sanibel Bicycle Club member Tom Sharbaugh to help come up a plan to get riders rolling in the right direction.

"What will be on this site, it's a Welcome Center for the path system," he explained. The site, on the side of Periwinkle Way will feature a shaded area complete with a map of trails, history of the island, and a drinking fountain.

It comes at no cost to the city or taxpayers thanks to a long list of businesses and organizations. "It is completely funded by private donations," said Sharbaugh.

Tourists say it's a welcome addition.
The new project wont just have a map, it's also built with safety in mind: On it will be the rules of the road.

The center is expected to officially welcome visitors in the next few months.

The Welcome Center site itself is an official historic location. One of the first pioneer homes on Sanibel, the Rutland home, was once located on that property. A new sign will document that piece of history.
