PUNTA GORDA, Fla.- Charlotte County Sheriff's Narcotics Unit detectives arrested two more women involved in separate “doctor shopping” cases. Both women were arrested in the Charlotte County Jail where they’ve been held on unrelated charges.

April May Poore, 38, of 29430 Jones Loop Road in Punta Gorda, was arrested on four felony counts of Withholding Information from a Practitioner, and Violation of Probation. The other case involved Dawn Raye McMannis, 41, of 21194 Felton Ave. in Port Charlotte, who was arrested on one felony count on the same charge.

Narcotics detectives became aware Dec. 28 that Poore was doctor shopping in both Charlotte and Lee counties, seeing several doctors to obtain Oxycodone and Endocet. Detectives contacted her doctors and pharmacies where she filled her prescriptions. The McMannis case began Oct. 15 on reports McMannis was doctor shopping for Oxycodone, also in Charlotte and Lee counties.

Poore and McMannis were both seeing doctors to obtain narcotic medications for a specific ailment. Each signed the required Narcotics Medication Contract form stating they had not seen other doctors for the same condition to obtain pain medication; which is a felony.

Last Monday, Narcotics detectives arrested Sharika Shanika Smith, also of Port Charlotte, for doctor shopping to obtain Oxycodone pills. Smith had been using two doctors, one in Port Charlotte, the other in Tampa. She posted a $2,500 bond.

Poore, a once convicted felon, has been booked into the County Jail 6 times. She has been in jail since Oct. 9 on unrelated drug charges and is being held on no bond. McMannis, is a three time convicted felon, booked 16 times, and has been in the County Jail since Dec. 22 on a Grand Theft charge; her bond is $33,000.
