EVERGLADES CITY, Fla.- Crabbers in Everglades City say they're overworked and underpaid. They returned to work this week after a nine day strike in an attempt to raise prices.
They want their buyer, Joe's Stone Crab in Miami Beach, to pay another dollar per pund.
The crabbers say they're being taken advantage of because Joe's owns their whole market.
"People look at the price of crabs and whatever it is they think 'oh that's a lot of money.' It's not. It just doesn't go very far these days. I mean the price of fuel for non taxed diesel is approaching $4 a gallon. These boats hold 150-200 gallons of fuel. That adds up quick," crabber Joe Stem said.
Stem says the crabbers returned to work this week because they couldn't afford to stay home any longer.
WINK News made several attempts to contact officials with Joe's Stone Crab. Our calls were not returned.
