FORT MYERS, Fla.- The cold weather is heating up one local industry.

Several cooling and heating companies say they are getting an increase in calls for service.

The issues is many homes have broken heaters.

Experts say the reason is because here in Florida, we often don't turn on our heat.

One company we talked with says annual maintenance, including turning the heat on for a few minutes even hot months. will remedy the problem.

"Turn it on a few times a year. That way you know it working. The worst thing you can do is wait to the last minute and realize you have none and you are sleeping through 40degree night," said Matt Griffith, of Griffith Cooling & Heating Company in Fort Myers.

Griffith adds that waiting to the last minute to find out your heater is broken could leave you a night without heat, or calling for an emergency repair, which can be expensive.
