CAPE CORAL, Fla.- A Lee County Sheriff's Deputy shot and killed an armed man at a Cape Coral home Tuesday morning, whom U.S. Marshals had come to arrest.
The suspect has been identified as 22-year-old Joseph Cleary.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force received information out of New Hampshire as to the whereabouts of Cleary, a wanted felon. He was known to be armed and dangerous.
Just after 11:00 a.m., members of the task force responded to the 500 block of SE 6th Avenue, Cape Coral to serve the warrant. Cleary could be seen inside the home.
When task force members made contact with the subject, he fled to a bedroom. A Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputy assigned to the task force confronted Cleary, who was armed with a gun. The deputy fired his weapon striking Cleary, who died at the scene.
The U.S. Marshal's Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force is comprised of law enforcement officers from FDLE, Cape Coral Police Department, Fort Myers Police Department, the U.S. Marshal’s Office and the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
