BONITA SPRINGS, Fla.- The historic Shangri-La Resort in Bonita Springs is reopening this week after setting dormant for more than 18 years.
The current owners, Heather Burch and Addison Fischer, aquired the property on Old 41 when it went into foreclosure in 1998.
Since that time, the two have worked to restore it to the original which was built in the 1920's.
Generations of people, including celebrities, have come to the resort to experience its healing qualities.
The grounds are divided by the tidal Oak Creek and house a wading pool fed by natural mineral springs.
"I don't think I've ever really met somebody who didn't feel didn't feel the power, the grace, and the beauty of the place," said Burch.
Shangri-La Healing Waters and the Rotary Club of Bonita Springs are hosting a holiday event on Wednesday December 21st.
The ribbon will be cut at 5:00 and a birthday cake celebrating 90 years of the resort will be served to guests on an invitation-only basis.
From 6:00-9:00 Wednesday the public can tour the grounds, enjoy live music and food vendors for $10. Children can attend the event for free.
On Thursday the grounds will be open to the public free of charge from 11:00 AM-2:00 PM.
Heather Burch says she hopes to phase in the hotel, an all-organic restaurant, and the spa and baths before the end of season.
Phase 2, the resort's southern 4 acres will feature additional meeting space as well as organic gardens.
No firm timeline was given for that part of the project.
