NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. - A shrine of candles marks the house on Garden Street where Deane Wood was discovered dead.
Friends and neighbors in LaBonte's Garden RV Park in North Fort Myers gathered Saturday evening to honor the 41-year-old maintenance man who was well-known and well-liked.
"He's the best friend of my life," said Eddie Simons, Wood's roommate and friend. "He was a great person. There wasn't a person in this park or anywhere I know of that could say anything bad about him."
According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, Wood's body was found in the home of Znop Vmon, 61, a neighbor.
Deputies say Vmon had gone to Simons, saying Wood had died in his home as a result of "gutting himself." Simons told deputies when he went to see for himself, Wood was lying on his back on Vmon's living room floor, with stab wounds to his chest and stomach, and a large bloody knife in his left hand.
The sheriff's office says Simons left the room to talk to a 9-1-1 operator, and when he returned, the knife was on the kitchen table, with Vmon being the only person there to move it.
Authorities say the fact that Wood was right-handed led them to believe suicide was not possible. Vmon was arrested for second-degree murder and brought to the Lee County Jail.
The death of one neighbor and the arrest of another has the neighborhood reeling.
"I got a phone call from my friend telling me what happened, I just couldn't believe it. I just couldn't believe it was him," says Gerald Warnecke, a neighbor.
Loved ones are determined to remember Wood for his kindness and the joy he brought to others.
"He was a good person," says Christopher Dalton, a friend and neighbor. "He was the type of person who would take the shirt off his back and give it to you."
