Radio personality Randy Sherwyn is producing a Christmas show that plays around the world. It ranks as the most listened to Christmas-themed radio broadcast in the world. And he does it from a studio in his home.
"Dogs and Christmas are my passions," Sherwyn told WINK News. "It's such a time of the year that you can be a Jesus person, and you can be a Santa person. I am both - I love Jesus and I love Santa! And I do not go for this 'holiday' stuff...it's Christmas!"
Sherwyn converted a bedroom to a studio in his home in Lee County. There, he announces the transitions for the show, and mixes in the songs of the season.
The 12-hour show also features trivia about Christmas. For example, Sherwyn says, the same company that made the first toilet bowl brushes, also made the first artificial Christmas trees. And he says they used the same equipment to make both.
Sherwyn has been producing the Christmas radio show since 1999. He says he got a note from a listener in the Northeast U.S. a few years ago. The electricity had gone out, and all she had was a fire in the fire-place, a battery-powered radio, and the broadcast of Sherwyn's Christmas show. "That was her Christmas, for her and her two children. She wrote me the nicest note, and it brought tears to my eyes. That's what it is all about," said Sherwyn.
This year, the broadcast will play on 60 to 65 U.S. radio stations, a number of Canadian stations, and stations in the Phillipines and Ireland. It also plays on U.S. Armed Forces Radio, which is heard in 177 countries around the globe. Canada Forces radio also plays the show in Europe.
"I just love it, I keep the decorations up all year long. It keeps me in the spirit of being merry and joyful. There's nothing wrong with that," said Sherwyn.
The show will air locally on Sunny 106 on Christmas Day.
