CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla.- A section of U.S. 41 in Charlotte County was closed off early Monday morning as the Florida Highway Patrol investigated a traffic fatality.

Officers told WINK News that a motorcycle was traveling northbound on U.S. 41 at an extremely high rate of speed when the driver ran a red light at Harborview and 41 in Port Charlotte.  The motorcycle struck a small southbound S.U.V. that was trying to make a left turn. Then the motorcycle and the driver traveled an additional 2 to 3 hundred feet before coming to a stop on the shoulder of the road.

"The motorcycle, as a result of the collision, overturned- ejected the driver and the driver was flown out to Lee Memorial hospital for treatment of life threatening injuries and he was later pronounced deceased at the hospital," said Lt. Connor Cardwell of the Florida Highway Patrol.

Punta Gorda Police Officers were chasing the motorcycle suspect, but the investigation is still ongoing.

The driver and a passenger of the S.U.V. were also transported and treated for minor injuries.
