EAST NAPLES, Fla.- East Naples firefighters are turning up the heat.. with their first ever calendar featuring twelve of Collier county's men in uniform.
"I think if this guy came in my house to save me I'd feel pretty safe," said Naples resident Neil Whittredge.
Firefighters say after months of turmoil, including budget cuts and scandal, preparing for the photo shoot provided a much needed boost in station morale.
"We all had little competitions about who was dieting, who was getting skinny, and who was doing this so it was fun amongst the guys who were doing it," said firefighter Ray Kilmer.
But there's just one problem... three of the men in the East Naples calendar don't even work there!
That's right.. Mr. January.. Mr. September and Mr. December were all laid off amid the department's budget crisis this year... just after the calendars went to press.
"We've heard of maybe cuts and things and then it was like bam two weeks from now they're going. So it was too late there wasn't anything we could do," Kilmer continued.
The department is hoping to sell a thousand calendars and raise between twelve and fourteen thousand dollars for breast cancer research..
Judging by the reaction we got in downtown Naples.. they shouldn't have a hard time.
"I think I wish I was 20 years younger again," said Sharon Slate.
Even though they're no longer with the department, the laid off firefighters will continue to be part of the promotions and signings.
"They all want to be a part of it still. They want to be part of the fire house. They're one of us. They're brothers. We try to stay in contact with them," Kilmer continued.
If you'd like to pick up one of these calendars you can go to the East Naples Fire District or to the next signing on Saturday night at Pure in Naples. They are $15 each.
