PUNTA GORDA, Fla.- A Charlotte County Sheriff's deputy arrested a Fort Myers man after he stole $3,000 worth of metal items from a mining pit in South Charlotte County near the Lee County line. Arrested and charged with Grand Theft and Trespassing was Virgil Raymond Williams Jr., 24, 6781 Carmelita Drive.

At 3 a.m. Wednesday the deputy was on parked on Little Farm Road by S.R. 31 looking for any suspicious activity in the area. He saw a Chevrolet S-10 pickup driving with its lights off. The deputy watched the vehicle pull on to S.R. 31 and observed the back end of the pickup was riding very low. He saw a tee-shirt covering the license tag and made a traffic stop on S.R. 31 by Horseshoe Road. In the bed of the pickup were many large pieces of machined mechanical parts.

Williams at first said he was back in the area looking for his dog while hog hunting. The Earth Source Mine pit is owned by Sid Kidson LLC & Partners. Williams said he saw the large metal items by the pit and put them in his pickup. The pit manager arrived and wanted Williams trespassed from the property at 13500 S.R. 31, and file charges. Williams said he is unemployed and was going to scrap the items to pay child support. Williams was transported to the Charlotte County Jail where he posted a $3,000 bond and was released.
