CAPE CORAL, Fla.- A familiar face is returning to Cape Coral.
"Big John" has stood over the plaza near Cape Coral Parkway for more than 40 years. Now, after an extended vacation, John is returning.
The 28-foot-tall, 6,000-pound giant went missing over 90 days ago.
At first, he was thought to have been stolen. There was even a ransom note left behind! That turned out to be a hoax.
Big John went away for a litte rest and relaxation. During that time, he got a makeover, the first since 1991. He had hip replacement surgury and new steel placed around his midsection and the top and bottom of his legs. The total cost was about $6,000.
Many are happy to have Big John come back home.
"Big John needed a facelift and a little spa time, so his return will be a wonderful thing for the city of Cape Coral because he truly is a landmark," said Chris Chulakes-Leetz of the Cape Coral City Council.
If you would like to say hello to Big John, there will be an official "welcome back" ceremony tomorrow starting at the plaza 5:30 p.m.
there will be entertainment and speeches.
