NAPLES, Fla. - Democrat Senator Bill Nelson met with the League of Women Voters of Collier County Friday afternoon.

The stop in Southwest in Florida came a day after the senator wrote a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder calling for a federal investigation into new voting laws which Nelson says suppresses the minority and youth vote.

"That is an assault on one of the most basic rights in America and that is the right for an American citizen to vote and have it counted as they intended", he said.

Nelson and other Democrats are concerned new voting restrictions including a reduction in the number of days for early voting and changing voter information at polling sites targets minorities and college students.

The two groups lean Democratic.

A federal court in Washington is reviewing the laws.
