CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla.- Charlotte County Sheriff's Economic Crimes Unit detectives issued a warning Friday of a new scam to hit the county this week. Anyone who received a blue check Money Order delivered from FedEx this week in reference to either an online ad or newspaper ad, DO NOT deposit the check. The scam had instructions to deposit the check, keep part of the money, and wire the rest somewhere else.

ECU Detective Sgt. Jon Fullerton said, “Do not deposit or cash the Money Order as it is fraudulent. If you received such a check via FedEx this week, please contact the Sheriff’s Office immediately. So far, we have a list of 48 in Charlotte County who were sent the fraudulent money orders.” Sgt. Fullerton said the scam has also hit North Port and Arcadia areas.

The amount printed on the check is for $1,950.45. On the top right of the blue check is a black printed key; below it, it reads “285 Yellowstone, Pocatello, Idaho.” On the bottom right is reads “Issued by CitiBank, New Castle, Delaware.”

A local resident answered an ad in a newspaper to help a business as an office assistant and to pay bills. The checks were printed and he mailed them via FedEx Monday and Tuesday before he contacted CCSO believing he may have been duped into a fraud.

If anyone answered an ad and received a blue check via FedEx this week, please call the CCSO at 941-639-2101, or Crime Stoppers at 800-780-TIPS (8477).
