FORT MYERS, Fla. - Thieves target a gas station 5 times in 2 months and get away with thousands of gallons of diesel fuel.

Owners of the Sunoco at 3006 Palm Beach Boulevard say the crooks have been prying open the pumps and rewiring the system to reset the pump's meter.

The thieves are believed to have gotten away with more than $6,500 worth of fuel - taking nearly 500 gallons of gas every time they made the steal.

Fort Myers police are investigating a couple that, on Tuesday, used a credit card to pre-pay for the fuel - but after rewiring it, were able to get away with 137 gallons of fuel without the station clerk noticing.

The gas station does have surveillance cameras, but management says they were ripped out when the thefts began - and have yet to be replaced.
