FORT MYERS, Fla.- There were little lambs, monkeys and a few Flintstones...and all the outfits were made at the Y.M.C.A.
For some kids, the handmade costumes are the only ones they'll wear this year.
The National Retail Federation estimates U.S. consumers spent more than 2.5 billion dollars on costumes this year, but that budget was not blown at the Y.M.C.A. of the Palms.
Two hundred thirty children from 13 different classrooms gathered for the Annual Halloween Storybook Parade Monday morning. Every child got a chance to collect candy and dress up.
About 50 percent of the kids at the Y.M.C.A. of the Palms are on financial assistance, but that doesn't mean they can't share in the Halloween fun.
Trick or treaters still looking for a costume should be sure to follow some safety tips:
- Make sure they are flame resistant and reflective to be seen at night.
- Avoid masks. Use make-up instead so your kids can see.
- If you're using any hand-me-down costumes for your younger ones, make sure to make the necessary adjustments so your child won't be tripping over it.
