TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida remains among the states with the lowest public university tuition.
The College Board released a report Wednesday ranking Florida 45th nationwide in average cost to attend a public university. The average tuition is $5,626, 11.8 percent higher than last year.
Last year, Florida ranked 48th nationwide. Despite the increase in cost, Florida's average tuition is still below the national average of $8,244, an increase of 8.3 percent.
Louisiana, Wyoming, West Virginia, New Mexico, Alaska and Utah all have cheaper tuition than Florida.
According to Florida law, the Legislature determines a base tuition rate and Board of Governors can approve an additional hike totaling no more than 15 percent. Any increases cannot exceed the national average tuition.
