Lee county commissioners put off a decision on whether to allow the city of Bonita Springs to split off from the county's emergency medical services. A special magistrate will consider the case and try to determine the facts.

"I am encouraged by that. I think we need an independent, third-party to listen to this matter," said Bonita Fire AND Rescue Chief Phil Kinsey.

Lee co. Emergency Medical Services opposes the split.

"I know we provide the highest-quality care around and the numbers will prove that we are the most cost-effective way to go. Leave the system that works, alone," said Kim Dickerson, head of Lee EMS.

There's no word on how much Lee will pay for the special magistrate to take the case, or how long it might take to get the findings.

Lee Commissioners eventually will have to make the final decision.
