DESOTO COUNTY, Fla.- Forecasters are watching a broad area of low pressure to our southwest that could become the next named tropical system of the year. No matter if the system becomes better organized or not, rain will dominate the area weather with off and on showers and thunderstorms until Wednesday when a frontal boundary will sweep through Florida ushering in drier and cooler weather. There is the potential for strong gusty winds and possible isolated tornadoes as the system works its way across Florida. Most of the area can expect three to four inches of rain with heavier amounts to our south.

Peace River crested Saturday night at 11.75 feet and is currently at a level of 11.36 feet. The forecast is for the river to fall below flood stage early Tuesday. Heavy rain is forecasted to fall over most of south Florida the next several days and predictions are for the river to rise back above flood stage on Saturday near 12.5 feet. The height of the flooding depends on the track of the approaching weather system and how much rain falls into the Peace River water basin to our north.
