ST. JAMES CITY, Fla.- A Pine Island man died yesterday after crashing his vehicle into a tree.

On Wednesday, at 4:22pm, the Lee County Sheriff's Office received a call about a single-vehicle crash. The incident occurred at 4141 Stringfellow Road, St. James City. Deputies responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, a gold colored, four-door, 2006 Mercedes-Benz was found off the roadway. The vehicle had crashed into a large pine tree. The driver was transported to Cape Coral Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Due to the nature of the incident, deputies with the Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit were assigned to continue the investigation into the fatality.

Preliminary information reveals the driver, 78-year-old Albert Louis Tidwell, 78, of 2209 Macadamia Lane in St. James City, was southbound on Stringfellow Road. He slowly veered off the road to the right and struck the tree. No other vehicles or persons are believed to have been involved.

An autopsy will be performed to determine cause of death. It’s possible Mr. Tidwell suffered a medical event leading to the crash. If anyone witnessed the crash they are asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit at (239) 477-1000. The investigation continues.
