PUNTA GORDA, Fla.- Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Cameron reported Monday that “Operation Medicine Cabinet has been a huge success. Since June 15, our agency has collected 234 pounds of expired or unused medications deposited in special containers at the District-1 Office in Englewood, and the District-4 Office in Port Charlotte.

According toErin Hume, CCSO Evidence Unit Supervisor, “When we collect the medications they are accepted into the Evidence Unit’s inventory and secured until we get a court order to destroy them by incineration.”

If you have questions about transporting and disposal of unused medications, please contact the Port Charlotte District-4 Office in Promenades Mall, 3280 Tamiami Trail, at 941-258-3900, or the District-1 Office in Englewood, 6868 San Casa Road, at 941-475-9005.

The secured depository boxes are available to the public Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For those living south of the Peace River, unused medications can be dropped off at the Punta Gorda Police Department.
