CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - The Church of Scientology has paid more than $400,000 in fines related to the years-long delays in completing its signature building in downtown Clearwater.
A city spokeswoman says a representative of the church dropped off a check for $413,500 on Thursday after a protracted disagreement over code violations related to the so-called Flag Building. The eight-story structure covers an entire city block and is considered the gem of the church's spiritual headquarters in downtown Clearwater.
The Tampa Tribune reports that the church took more than 12 years to finish the building after the permit was issued. Critics said the church ran out of money, but church officials blamed it on a redesign of the building to meet changing needs.
