TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Circuit Judge Gregory Holder has issued a warning to Hillsborough County residents who failed to show up for jury duty this week.
Holder says the 387 people who skipped jury duty Monday morning will be summoned to a Nov. 4 hearing for questioning. And those without a legitimate excuse face a $100 fine or jail time of six months for contempt of court.
The St. Petersburg Times reports the judge became angered when it took more than three hours to gather a pool of 22 prospective jurors for a trial. He called skipping jury duty "absolutely unacceptable."
The newspaper reports Hillsborough County has a no-show rate of between 20 and 25 percent. That doesn't include people who have been exempted by the court.
