FORT MYERS, Fla.- On Thursday, September 29, 2011 at 1:41 p.m. the Fort Myers Police Department responded to a shots fired call at 3811 Metro Parkway. The caller gave a detailed description of the suspect and his vehicle. Officers in the area spotted the vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the suspect fled. Due to the violent nature of the call officers pursued the suspect.
While attempting to elude police, the suspect crashed the Lincoln Navigator he was driving twice. First, the suspect hit a marked patrol car at Canal Street and Broadway. He continued to flee from police and crashed with a minivan at Canal Street and Central Avenue, where he then took off on foot. Two officers ran after him.
During the foot pursuit the suspect shot at the officers. The officers returned gunfire hitting the suspect. The suspect, Starling Javier, 21, of Fort Myers, was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital where he died. The officers were not hurt. Two adults and two children who were involved in the crash at Canal and Central were transported to the hospital as a precaution.
As part of standard procedure the two officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the department’s Professional Standards Bureau.
