ESTERO, Fla.- A three million dollars gift was donated to Florida Gulf Coast University. The money will be used to support programs, getting students involved in the community, and promoting student leadership.

The donor is Naples resident Janet Cohen. She tells WINK News giving the money was bittersweet. She lost her daughter about a year ago and then her husband, Harvey, passed away in February. The donation was his wish.

Students here spend an average of 15 hours a week in the classroom. Officials hope this new donation will encourage more students to get outside of the classroom, and get some new life experiences.

The Cohens established a scholarship program with the university in 2006. They've also contributed money to help build North Collier Hospital, and to support the Holocaust Museum and Education Center of Southwest Florida.
