FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - The Broward County Commission has rejected a plan to install mosaic blades of seagrass in 42 restrooms entrances at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

The commission's 6-2 vote against the $424,314 project came late Tuesday. Commissioners said they didn't like that proposed artist Dixie Friend Gay is not local. She is from Houston.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports the artistic panels - at $10,102 per restroom - were designed to give travelers a "unique and positive visual experience."

It's not the first time commissioners have turned art critic. They recently ordered the redrawing of mural wraps for 23 airport shuttle buses. Commissioners complained the design included menacing-looking sharks that could send the wrong message to tourists. On Tuesday, they approved a design with non-predator fish only.
