LEE COUNTY, Fla -- For the first time, a local humane society is opening its doors on Sundays.

The Gulf Coast Humane Society is now open from noon to four that day.
In the past - they've only been open six days a week.
Executive Director David Stroud says aggressive fundraising efforts, and dollars donated, are reasons for the change.

"By being open on Sundays now, seven days a week - another thing that does, in addition to being good news for the shelter pets, it also makes the statement that we are a very strong financial organization as well," said Stroud.

More good news: Stroud says the shelter is on a record pace for adoptions this year.
