PUNTA GORDA, Fla.- Charlotte County Sheriff's Major Crimes Unit detectives report a Ft. Myers man has been charged in connection with a shooting incident around 2:40 a.m. Tuesday on U.S. 41 at Jones Loop Road, south of Punta Gorda. The arrest came following an intensive two-day investigation by CCSO Major Crime’s detectives and a Ft. Myers Police Department detective.

Detectives said the victim was driving southbound toward Lee County on U.S. 41 near Jones Loop Road when a white Ford Crown Victoria came alongside and someone fired several rounds into the driver’s side of the victim’s vehicle striking the male driver in the leg. The victim was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital where he underwent surgery for the gunshot wound; he is currently in stable condition.

During the joint investigation of the shooting incident in Charlotte County, Ft. Myers Police detectives late Wednesday arrestedKevyn Lee Smiley, 23, of 2632 Laramie Street, Ft. Myers, for Obstructing Justice by Tampering with a Witness.

Subsequent investigations by CCSO Major Crime’s detectives led to the issuance of an arrest warrant Thursday for Smiley on charges of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, Aggravated Assault with a Firearm, Shooting into a Motor Vehicle, and Discharge of a Firearm in Public. He was served notice in the Lee County Jail where he is being held on the Tampering with a Witness charge in this case. Smiley’s vehicle was seized during the investigation and impounded for further processing.
