TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Noted Florida attorney E. Thom Rumberger is dead at age 79.

A family spokesman said Thursday that Rumberger died from complications related to diabetes.

Rumberger represented the widow of NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt, in opposing publication by the news media of photos from Earnhardt's autopsy following the crash that killed the famed driver. Rumberger was also successful in persuading the Florida Legislature to pass a law making it a felony to publish autopsy photographs.

Rumberger was the Republican nominee for Florida attorney general in 1970 and was defeated by Democrat Robert Shevin in the general election. Rumberger then served as county attorney in Seminole County from 1971-1974.

A Marine Corps veteran, Rumberger earned his undergraduate and law degrees at the University of Florida.

Funeral services are Monday in Tallahassee.
