PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) - The Coast Guard has called off a search for a Panhandle man never returned from a fishing trip in the Gulf of Mexico.
Authorities say 41-year-old Lee Kent launched his 37-foot boat from Orange Beach, Ala., on Saturday. Family members reported the man missing Sunday.
Coast Guard spokesman Israel Parker says he's not sure whether the man's vehicle and boat trailer were found at the launch site.
The Pensacola News Journal reports Kent's boat didn't have a transponder or a distress beacon.
Parker says crews searched 28,000 nautical miles over a 47-hour period looking for the man. He says this is why officials encourage boaters to make a float plan and let people know the route they plan to take.
Kent is from Gulf Breeze, near Pensacola.
