BARTOW, Fla. (AP) - Commissioners in one central Florida county are pushing for a new University of South Florida branch campus to instead be an independent school.
The Ledger reported that Polk County commissioners voted unanimously on Tuesday to support making the branch campus independent, severing its affiliation with the Tampa-based University of South Florida. The campus, known as University of South Florida Polytechnic, is under construction near Interstate 4 and the Polk Parkway.
The push to make USF Poly a separate state university is the result of a lobbying effort by local business and civic leaders. The proposal will be considered by the university system's board of governors in mid-September.
The commissioners' resolution cited the millions of dollars contributed by local governments for development of the campus and road improvements.
