RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Police say a suspect was shot by a Riviera Beach police officer after they say he fled from a routine traffic stop, carjacked a vehicle before running from authorities while waving a gun.
    
The Palm Beach Post (http://bit.ly/nE1c5E ) reports the unidentified suspect was taken to a hospital, where he had surgery Sunday afternoon. His condition was not known.
    
Authorities say the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office has taken over the investigation.
    
Police say the incident began when the suspect fled during a traffic stop Sunday afternoon. They say he tried unsuccessfully to carjack a vehicle. He forced his way into another and made the driver take him to West Palm Beach. The shooting happened after they returned to nearby Riviera Beach.
    
Officials didn't identify the officer involved in the shooting.
