NORTH PORT, Fla.- On Thursday, July 28, at approximately 1:32pm, officers of the North Port Police Department responded to the North Port Branch of Sarasota Memorial Hospital in reference to a 4-year-old child who had been brought to the hospital with a BB gun shot wound to the neck. Preliminary investigation revealed that the child's 14-year-old cousin was shooting a BB gun at a residence in the 2700 block of Traverse Avenue and that there was an accidental discharge of the weapon which struck the 4 year old. The pellet apparently penetrated the child's neck area and lodged in an area near the child's heart. Doctors at the hospital determined that because of where the pellet was lodged that the child should be taken to All Children's Hospital in Tampa. The child was flown by Bay Flight to All Children's Hospital where he will receive further treatment. At this time no charges are expected.
