PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - A Charlotte County church becomes the scene of a shooting investigation Sunday morning. Deputies say a pastor found a man and a woman with gunshot wounds outside of Friendship United Methodist Church, south of Punta Gorda.

Detectives said the woman has been identified as Patricia Wright, 57, of Las Vegas, Nevada. She remains in critical condition at Lee Memorial Hospital in Ft. Myers.

The man was already dead when authorities arrived.

Detectives have a tentative name, but still do not have a positive identification on the white male found dead under a tree at the rear of Friendship United Methodist Church, 12275 Paramount Drive. Wright was found beside the man; both had what appear to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the head. A rifle and a shotgun were recovered at the scene, along with a Mazda SUV with Nevada license plates.

The Charlotte County Medical Examiner’s Office has performed an autopsy on the unidentified male and is awaiting positive identification. MCU detectives said it is believed both are from Las Vegas, but at one time had lived in Charlotte County.
