LEE COUNTY, Fla. - WINK News wanted to know just how easy it is to hack someone's cell phone. We were surprised by what we discovered.
Cell phones are like mini-computers. The more technology advances, the easier it can be for hackers to get into your personal information. Today we're taking a look at how they can access your phone through your voicemail system.
Many people we talked to don't know their voicemail pin number, which means a hacker probably does.
"When they make these phones, they do not make them perfect so there are holes, and everybody exploits them," said 'Rob the Phone Doctor' Robert Mason.
Exploits them in one easy way: accessing your phone - with their phone - through the voicemail system.
WINK News wanted to find out how easy it was to hack into a cell phone, so we took four numbers of people in our newsroom, with consent, and found out it was actually pretty easy.
Here's how it works. Say your phone dies, or you are away from your phone. You pick up another, dial your number and pin, then listen to your voicemail messages. If you don't have a solid pin number hackers can get in the same way.
"I have phones that come to me with security passcodes on them all the time, and i do the 1-2-1-4, 6-9-6-9 and 80% of the time i get past your security to get to your phone," said Mason.
The experts say - make sure you have a voicemail pin number that is completely random, and not easy to figure out.
Make sure it has nothing to do with your birthday or social security number, either.
