LEE COUNTY, Fla. - Fort Myers Beach is getting positive results with its ground-level pedestrian signs -- so much so, it wants the county to buy more.

But locals say they're ready to help foot the bill if the county won't fund the project.

Pincher's Crab Shack is one of several beach businesses supporting the request for more signs and offering to pay.

"Fort Myers Beach is a pedestrian town. People do a lot of walking and a lot of biking as well," says Cam Marstellar, with Pincher's. "Cars just go blowing by and don't even pay attention."

After several pedestrian accidents, the town tried installing bright caution signs that sit in the middle of the street. About a half-dozen are dotted along Estero Blvd.

Town councilman Alan Mandel says they're working so well, they would like to see about 20 more.

Mandel says it would cost about $400 a piece.

The cause has even grabbed the attention of individuals.

Peggy Zimmerman lives in Wisconsin and owns a condo on Fort Myers Beach. Last year, a driver hit and killed her 5-year-old granddaughter Eva Marie in Wisconsin.

Zimmerman also wants to sponsor a sign -- in Eva Marie's honor.

"No one should fear walking in a crosswalk whether they're going to the beach or the park or to visit a local store or a school," says Zimmerman.
