TAMPA, Fla. - Officials say a Tampa police officer fired shots at a man who was reportedly suicidal and pointing his weapon at officers.

Police spokeswoman Laura McElroy says 74-year-old Umberto Ferrara called 911 early Tuesday morning, claiming that he was armed and planning to shoot himself.

Officers arriving on the scene reported hearing gunshots before finding Ferrara sitting on a porch, bleeding from a head wound and firing a gun.

McElroy says Officer Dan Evers shot at Ferrara when the man pointed a gun at him, but it wasn't clear if the officer hit Ferrara.

Police say Ferrara was hospitalized with two gunshot wounds. He was in serious but stable condition. Doctors will have to remove the bullets before police can determine whether both wounds were self-inflicted or if Evers hit Ferrara.
